I was going through a really tough patch in my life and I had decided it was time I do something that made me happy. I had always wanted a dog since I was a kid, but the reason why we never got one was because my brother has Autism, was afraid of large dogs, and was sensitive to loud barking. I knew I would have to get a dog that passed my brother’s test; my brother is one of the most important people in my life and I knew I was taking a huge chance by even just looking at dogs to adopt. It was no doubt an internal fight I would have with myself but I decided to take the chance. This was something that I wanted to do for myself, but I also wanted to make sure my brother would be okay with this decision.
I was looking on Noble Dog Rescue’s Facebook and Instagram page when I saw this little dog with the sweetest face. He looked like a puppy and he was skinny. But I just fell in love with him. It took me a fraction of a second and I thought to myself, ‘that’s my dog’.
Dobby came from San Jacinto, California. He was in a high kill shelter and was close to being put down. Luckily, Noble Dog Rescue made sure to save him. For him to be adopted though, he had to be put on a train for 8 days from southern California to Toronto. On my birthday, I went to visit him along with my brother at the foster home. I was nervous the whole way. It turned out that there was no reason for me to be worried. I brought Dobby home with me after many successful trips with my family in tow.
I had absolutely nothing to worry about the whole time. My brother and Dobby get along just great! When Dobby isn’t around, my brother asks for him – to us, this means that Dobby is part of the family and is a regular part of my brother’s day.
Something that I thought I was doing for myself turned out to be the best birthday present and also so good and therapeutic for my family. When any of us have a tough day, they get to sit with Dobby because he just makes everyone in the family happy. He asks for tummy rubs every day, and is excited to see you all the time. I couldn’t ask for a more perfect, good-natured dog.
True to his Harry Potter themed name – when I say ‘avada kedavra’ he rolls over! He gets so excited for every human being. He can’t contain himself sometimes that he just wiggles all over the place. There are times where he just ends up not being able to decide whether to wiggle or roll over for a belly rub so he kind of does this weird wiggle dance that ends up in him looking like he fell over.
I work in a field where I handle high-stress situations on a regular basis. I work with children who have disabilities, and the fact that these kids have a disability is *absolutely not* the high-stress part of my position – it’s the fact that they have to push through societal barriers, inaccessibilities and discrimination by others that makes it high stress. Along with my colleagues and families, we have to fight and work everyday to get kids the services and help that they need. I come home sometimes quite exhausted by my day and Dobby is always happy to see me.

Every day that I come home to see him, a smile comes over my face instantly. It’s like magic – he just is there and I am all of a sudden feeling happy and energized. And by the next day, I am ready to go again, all because Dobby made me so happy just by being himself.
